color blind

Forgive me if this question(s) seems elementary, (and long) but I'm trying to learn as I go along.I'm having a little trouble researching what color any particular traffic signal was originally, green? Yellow? Any other colors? Ive seen very nice examples of the same model of traffic signal in both colors> What determines the color? Manufacturer? Date? Did manufacturers produce signals in both colors depending on the order from municipalities? O I'm so confused!! I have a CH that is green but have seen the same model in original yellow. I need some veteran help!!!!

It all depends on where they were installed. Paint color was, and still is, dependent on the order, not on the signal.

Washington DC: Gray
NYC: Depends on the day, but a majority are yellow
Maryland: Yellow back, black front
and so on

One way to research these types of questions is to look in the appropriate catalog to see what the mfg. offered. The group keeps a document archive at http://signal-archive.d-domains.net/ where you will find some of those catalogs, as well as lots of other neat stuff.

If you ever get your hands on a document that isn't in the archive, a scan would be appreciated by all!

Nowadays especially there are a wide variety of colors. I was in Kansas not too long ago and they spec'd their signals with yellow bodies, black doors and yellow visors where as Pennsylvania (where I went to school) was all-yellow. Oregon is increasingly all-black but was dark green for the longest time.

Old MoDOT was Black Doors & Visors, Yellow body and Glass lenses,
Posts and Cabinets were Silver or Galvinized (Think Guardrail  )
Now is all Black, with most new installs going with the powdercoat black mastarms :glare:
