Sorry to bump this 3-year-old thread, but when/where did this configuration come in ?
And sorry for the bad quality

It is a good picture. :good:

I would assume it has been in use for quite a long time. I know New York City uses this particular configuration; however, it is common to see it attached to a cluster, not generally by itself, like that one in your picture. I have seen some photographs of this configuration from there as far back as 1976.

^Those were also common in Colorado and Wyoming, among other Rocky Mountain range states... I'm sure that Steve T. (signalstand) and Dan (RwCH) can verify...

Oh yes. CO Springs doesn't use that configuration, but many of the other areas do, and I think CDOT does as well. Columbus OH also does something similar, but with an 8" signal for the ball indications, so it's two 12" arrows to the left of a 3 section 8" signal.

I always though the Maryland doghouses were pretty cool.

There was a C-H Type R intersection that had that signal for a right turn movement c. late 1960's or early 1970's near Dayton, Ohio in that configuration. Seemed to predate most doghouses I ever saw in that area growing up. Sorry - no photos, it was replaced early 2000's.

I seem to remember seeing Dog Houses as far back as I can recall (1970s) in New Jersey and PA. More recently, one intersection near where I work in Allendale, NJ (Bergen County) has an intersection with a new style doghouse in which a bimodal arrow is used. I'm not sure what you'd call this type. Two reds on top was a "Dolly Parton". Would you call this the "Old Dolly Parton"?
