Powder coating tips and advice

Postby signalstand on Mon Nov 26, 2012 5:05 pm

Hello Gang,

I have 2 signals that are in line for restoration and I have decided to go the extra step of powder coating them. What I am asking is if anyone who has done this can give me some pointers :this: in regards to how much $ I will be looking at for both a single face and a four way three section signal, How much time it takes to do this work, how much prep should I do to save some $, if you would recommend powder coating any hardware like Acorns or what have you, or if it is just as well to have them professionaly painted at an automotive repair shop... anything like that would be helpful, I just have never bothered to research it and I have such little time it seems :rob: any more

If youy don't want to publically share :clapping: your insights on this topic, please feel free to contact me via land line :phone:

thank you! :hello:

You will need to take all of your parts to the powder coat shop and have them take a look.

The powder coater will need to do the final paint removal (bead blasting) as 100% of the old finish MUST be removed. Then the parts will be pre-baked in the oven so any residual chemicals left in the pores of the metal can burn out (out gassing). It is not until after the pre-baking that they will actually powder coat your parts. A good portion of the labor charge for powder coating comes from the removal of the original finish. I suppose you could save some money if you were able to remove most of it yourself. But...once again, ask the powder coat shop for a better answer.

A friend of mine owns a powder coating shop here in LA. I'm familiar with the process because of him.

I've had some signals powder coated. I don't remember the price of the single face lights anymore, but I believe it was in the neighborhood of $200. Both of these were 1 piece cast bodies (3 section length) with 1 (3) lens door in one case and 3 visors and in the other case, 3 doors with cast visors.

I've had 2 4 ways done too.

One case, I had a 4 way and a 9 inch ped media blasted at one place and it was around $230. Then the powder coat was done somewhere else and it was around $400.

The other case, I had the 4 way media blasted and powder coated by the same place and it was $480.

I've had medium sized bolts powder coated too and they turned out good. Obviously, they didn't coat the threads, just the rest of the bolt.

Hope this helps!

Steve,

I have a complete but small powder coating setup, but have only done a few pieces and they came out pretty good. I'm still deep in the learning process and no doubt have a lot still to learn. I haven't had a bit of time to do anything with it for a long time, but hopefully will be able to fiddle with it this winter.

Maybe later (next year) I'll be able to be good enough to offer this service to the group.

Here's a couple of shots of one of the parts I did:

They can take a sample of the original color and powdercoat to match, yes? :beg:

Yes they can, but that raises the price to astronomical levels, and you have to buy a large quantity of it. I've run across a company that sells a huge variety of colors and so far they've got everything I need color-wise in their stock colors.

The cost depends on how much they are willing to work with you. I had a 4-way, 4 single face signals, two poles and bases and a flasher box powder coated....a Dupont Hunter Green for a little over $200. I was also quoted a price per piece that put it well over 1k

Guess I'll have to speak with the local folks and see if we can come up with a 'close enough' in-stock match. I'm not made of money, dammit. :Phil:
