While in Staten Island in New York City a couple of weeks ago, I drove on one portion of Richmond Avenue and was surprised to see that N.Y.C.D.O.T. replaced the original 8" traffic signals with brand new 12" traffic signals. Was kind of strange, yet sad at the same time to see these, since I remembered the original heads for quite a long time. Most of them were manufactured by Marbelite and likely dated back to when this portion of Richmond Avenue was widened in the early 1970s.
The speed limit is 35 M.P.H., so it makes sense as to why the conversion happened. Though the original heads that face the cross streets that meet Richmond Avenue still remain, which is good to know. Was able to snap one picture of a pair on this portion. These are at Eton Place and Richmond Avenue.
