They're were some that were cast, stored and not put in service until later years. Yours may be one of them and explain the one color and nice shape.

Hi Troy,

I could envision that. Even if stored, I would think they had put some kind of paint on them, especially if they were cast iron to preserve the metal and unit for later use.

Cheers!

I recently picked up one of these beauties which also appears to have the original paint and no sign of having been re-painted. The bottom is also dated 1948. I believe that Troy's theory makes great sense. There were a lot of these out there in the day. Another example of this I remember (and Easy will vouch) were the days when Caltrans had a ton of NOS signal equipment which never saw service and ended up being scrapped.

Congrats on your find, Randy. I had been looking for the right opportunity to grab one of these for quite some time. They are cool. Does anyone have one of the concrete poles with the sort of pinnacle top to which many of these were mounted?

Without a key or a source for the restricted key, they're not worth much, unless you just want the esthetics.
I may have a source for a key, but no lock. I had a key made for the original lock that was in my Curb Cop parking box. Took the guy a month, but he found the correct blank and cut a key.

That bracket is worth something, as most boxes I've seen are missing their mounting bracket.

Vaughn, why are you locking the box? You got a receipt thief in the area?
