Wow, Ed, that crossroads sign is also very very rare!

With regards to the paint, it depended on who painted it, although generally speaking it was just the end caps and amber, and it didn't extend onto the body.

Would you happen to know what the proper paint scheme is? As you can see, the paint that's on there now is in poor condition and I'm unsure if it's original.

It currently has a flat or satin off-white (almost 'antique-white') for the field/background and a gloss black for the letters and border. Does that sound right? Or was the field originally regular white and has just yellowed with age?

I goofed when I painted mine. I painted the end caps black instead of white.

Here's some early Australian AWA and later Eagles lazing in the sun on my Signal farm. Only the finest thoroughbred signals on stud.

I have three AWAs, which are virtually the same as the Plessey Tin signals. All mine have plain glass lenses. No visors though. However, I do have a cutdown red/green one with cutaway visors. I'm going to use these to get more made and use the lenses and doors to replace some damaged ones on the other signals. Mine were found via eBay Australia and had been previously used as stage lighting for a band. The two yellow Eagles with black doors were in the same lot.

I've finally made myself a workshop and can therefore make a start on restoring my collection of vintage Australian signals. I shall post progress as it happens.

There is no such word as "Lense".

I'm under the impression that the AWA Tin lanterns were bought/manufactured under license from ATE/Plessey, as were the French and Belgian versions.

Ed, sorry for the late reply, but I've been away from here recently due to exams and stuff!

Those signs were likely to just be flat white for the background and flat black for the raised parts. This is generally how they were, although some used gloss, probably when repainted, or some were probably painted this way new from the factory.

If they required extra visibility, they had reflectors set into them.

Thanks for the info Simon. That will help tremendously in its restoration.

I hope you did well on your exams.
