anyone else have this problem?

Postby uccsa1 on Thu Jan 31, 2013 1:34 pm

I have an outdoor display of a art deco 3 color. I had a lights to go controller that burned a fuse every time it got humid or rained for several days or a bulb would burn out. I took this as a sign she must be leaking so I quickly applied clear window sealant around the arms the hold the light and made all new rope seals on the doors. Then she blew the controller. By now, your thinking what I was thinking ;"make sure you ground her" and I did, to the signal itself. My thought, shes aluminum, with steel arms to a telephone pole that should be enough  . So long story short, I bought a new controller and it is blowing the fuses, just like the lights to go. Do I need a ground rod, to the ground? I checked the wires and they look sound, with no visible browning or burns. (no shorts) Any ideas?
easy way is harder than it looks

check all the wires with a multimeter... you have a short to ground somewhere.

Check your source outlet.

There's a short somewhere. Sounds like you've checked the wiring. I've found wires pinched in the doors before. One sneaky place to look is in the base of the lamp socket (with out the lamp). I've seen some where the center electrode of the socket will get bent when the lamp screws in to the point where it makes contact with the shell of the socket.

another thought... your sure you have the control board properly mounted & insulated from the signal body & reflectors?

How are you grounding the signal? do you have a ground wire? you don't mention it, just that your using metal arms onto a telephone pole... and wooden telephone poles are insulators, not conductors. I might be missing something though

I have this one outside for over a year and works fine......

Slightly off topic:

Spoiler:
This was a contractor, It's neat, but it isn't labeled very well... so troubleshooting can be a pain, so I'm not happy:

This took about 10 seconds... still not happy with it, but it was for testing/temp:

This is more what I like stuff to look like:

This is what most installs look like around here:

Do any of the sockets have the "Hot" tabs touching the "Ground" Screw in part?

And....... I have only seen one in my lifetime, Are any of the light bulbs shorted??

But,
