Pipe Lengths

Postby pyth on Wed Aug 28, 2013 12:45 pm

When I hang my signals, I want the bottoms to all line up evenly. Does anyone know off-hand how long a pipe would need to be if I wanted an 8" signal to match the height of a 12" signal? I know I could measure it, but I don't want to goof up the thread lengths.

There is no magic number really, as the overall height of a signal can vary by manufacturer, whether it be 8" or 12". I know, for example, Econolite groove backs tend to have longer body sections than other brands.

Also, I wouldn't worry about the thread lengths -- you'll need a nut on either side anyway to hold the signal to the pipe, so if anything, put on too many threads, then adjust using your nuts.

I knew that was going to get a reaction. :rotfl: Certainly don't want to adjust the, um, personal nuts with a pipe wrench! The ones attached to the metal pipe will do just fine though.

How are you mounting them?

1) On stands?
2) In a 2 way bracket?
3) Are you using a coupling?
3A)How tall is the coupling?
4) Are you threading it so a lock nut is being used no the outside and inside of the signal head?
5)What make is the 8" signal head?
6)What make is the 12" signal head?

. :hello:
Well what do you know. If I put my name here, I do not have to sign it everytime.

I got a few heavy duty bike hooks from Home Depot, once I gather up some cash I'll grab a few gooseneck hangers from a scrapyard or online and hang them from a loft support in the garage. All of the lights will probably be hanging alone, unless I run across a duplicate of one I currently have. I'll only be putting a lock nut on the insides, the lights won't be moving and won't need to be sealed. The 8" heads going up will be a shortgroove econolite and a single face DT, as well as a 8-8-8-12 Marb. The bottoms don't all have to be perfect, but I wanted to avoid making them looking too close to the ceiling. I'm sure a few 12" sections of pipe would be fine.

Thanks.
