Street Light

Postby Stevejt66 on Wed Oct 30, 2013 2:23 pm

Hey gang,
I just purchased a street light head on Saturday, should be here by tomorrow! It is a 150 watt light, I think mercury vapor or something along those lines...It's brand new, never used, surplus stock they are getting rid of. I can't wait to get it. I plan to mount it ouside from my tree that holds up my span wire intersection. Probably won't do that until the Spring........I think it's a GE, but can't recall.

I've always liked your spanwire setup - that street light should compliment it even more!
A cop pulled me over and said, "Papers..." So I replied, "Scissors! I win!" and drove off.

I'll try to post a pic this weekend, but does anyone have experience in putting one of these into use? I was told by the seller that I could purchase the daylight sensor that plugs into the top of the light from a hardware store. It looks to be a three prong plug insert type. Then I assume I just connect the hot wire to the one terminal and neutral wire to the other terminal and hook in the ground to the body of the light and there you go, right? Any one have any advice??

I don't have any street lights, but there should be black (hot), white (neutral), and green/bare (ground) wires for power hook up.

The only three-prong plug type of photoelectric sensor I know of is...

This type of sensor controls the walkway lights around my house.

Wait, I'm confused..

If it's three prong, and you connect Hot, Neural, and Ground -

Won't that short Hot to Ground or Neutral when it's enabled? That seems kinda.. self-defeating. :)

My guess would be that one pin is neutral, one is hot input and one hot (switched) output. Also, if it's pretty much made of plastic, why would you need to ground it?
I'm so old I remember when the word "mother" only had one meaning!!!

I think Steve had two questions. The first was about the daylight sensor, and the second was how to wire the power to the light fixture itself (I'm assuming he meant terminal block of the light fixture, not terminals of the sensor). But with out a picture, I don't know for sure.

The "Photocell" is at Home Depot.

Then you need to find out if it has a multi tap transformer.

There should be a schematic glued inside it someplace. :Poof:
Well what do you know. If I put my name here, I do not have to sign it everytime.

Well gang,

I bought the three prong photo sensor and pluged it into the top of the light, and gave it a slight twist, then screwed in the bulb, took a test lead cord, and pluged it in and waa laa....It works!!!! Now just have to attach it to my tree. I have purchased a 1 1/2 inch threaded pipe and a flange which I plan to attach to the tree, then the light clamps onto the end of the pipe with two brackets inside the cobra head entrance, and then I'll have a working street light in my back yard to go with my intersection!!
