A "Safeway Light"?

Postby WSignalGLA on Tue Aug 04, 2009 5:53 pm

Hi everyone and I hope all's well.

A friend of mine gave me an old catalog for my birthday gift. He got it mostly because it had a lot of items that would have been marketed to fire departments sometime in the 1940's. Well, I was looking through it the other night and I saw this catalog, called "Municipal Equipment" was marketed by a company called General City Service Company which had an office here in Los Angeles. It wasn't long before I found that the catalog marketed a lot more than just equipment for fire departments. Toward the back of the catalog was six whole pages devoted to signs & signals!

I have made a PDF of the six pages I am speaking of, but am only able to post a couple of them because of size restrictions here. Nevertheless, take a look at the attached. There is a signal on there marketed under the brand name "Safeway Signal". I have never heard of this brand until now. Although this company had an office in Los Angeles, I am relatively sure that L.A. didn't use any of the signs or signals marketed in this catalog. Take a look and let me know what you folks know. On the page is a two way signal, but other pages I have show that Safeway also had a R-Y-G signal they were marketing.

Wow! Not only signs and fixtures, but controllers too. Synchronous controllers at that! Also, they offered the only combination siren/traffic signal I have ever heard of. (apparently intended for fire stations)?

Chin; with your permission, I will upload those pages to the archive.

If they were that price and still available now, they wouldn't be so collectable. ;)

What's with all the quotes in everyone's signatures?

Hey there all!

This was a really awesome find for me. I had the magazine for several days, but never flipped to the back pages. However, I have been looking for some kind of date for this catalog and have been unable to find one. I will say that I believe this could be from sometime in the 40's based on the firefighters tools/gear/vehicles I saw. I am looking to see if I can find some info on this company as well.

Vaughn, feel free to put these pages in the archive. I was particularly interested in the fact that they marketed the signals with the option of putting in self contained controllers. I guess those LTG controllers we use have been around much longer than I initially thought!

I also got a good laugh our of the prices on this stuff. $149.00 for a signal? I'd buy six of those at that price!

Thanks.

FYI, these appear to be rebranding of the "Southern Autoflow" porthole style 4-ways.

I posted some extracts to the Wiki. Funny their biggest selling point is "Twelve bulbs! Legal in all states!"
