The city should put them on that certain auction site that I hate. They should do so one at a time with unpredictable timing so they get the best price for each. This would allow the taxpayers to reap whatever the market will bear for these historical treasures that they own.

I think we all agree that destroying them is insane.

I don't have a problem with that. I hate seeing a high-bid "scrapper" or "wide-eyed parts-outer" win the lot then toss away all the poles and list the boxes, or just box parts at high dollar prices.

There were a few articles in the local paper, and there is quite the interest from citizens to purchase them, and the town does indeed plan to sell them, but right now town council doesn't know what method is best to sell them (eBay, first come first serve, lottery etc...), nor do they know what or where the money will go to. The FD wants some for retirement gifts, but even they have been declined access.
So the town does indeed know that there are of some value to them, but not enough value to actually make a difference in their budget. The smashing/scrapping is a last resort if they can not sell them. But like Phil said, if they can't figure out how to make a buck on them, they will make sure that no one else can, as they are still considered a city asset.

Do a test on ebay with one which will give an idea what they could bring. Then offer them locally for the same price. Any that are left go back to ebay and sell.
