Marbelite clusters of a different kind

Postby cjsebes on Mon Jul 22, 2013 8:53 am

Last year I picked up a cluster of three Marbelites. It only included two cap visors and one amber lens was missing, but the rest of the cluster had great potential. My plan was to re-create a New York-style 2-section RG cluster. This gave me a great head start with a good amount of signals. Francis was kind enough to sell me a few cut-away tunnel visors. This Saturday, I started to remove one section from each signal to leave myself with only a red and green section on each signal.

During the operation, I noticed that the sections are not the same. There are a couple that are 19408 but some are 19260. These have doors that deeper than the 19408 and are different on the inside back. When do the 19260 signals come into history?

I also came across a section or two that don't have any markings on them other than Marbelite on the back. These are very plain. Anyone tell me what these might be?

Otherwise, seeing how this was put together and speculating on its history is just another reason why I enjoy this stuff. I'll update everyone the further along I get. Thanks for the info, guys.

The early gen molds still had the door-mounted reflectors. This looks more like a LAST generation flattie. The cast id would be on the floor of the inside, and can be VERY hard to see. TD-19143HS, or something like that.

And Chris, the switch from 19260 to 19408 happened in 1965, according to Joe Lipari of Marbelite.

What a crazy, mixed up cluster!

Thanks for the info, Francis. I'll have to take a closer look inside the "flattie".

No problemo. I think Jay was thrown off becuause you mentioned it "only" saying MARBELITE on the back. The oldest generation(s) say MARBELITE with no "Pat Pending" or "New York". I assume yours does have those markings along with the brand name.
