Stadium Clock

Postby TacomaJoe on Sat Jul 27, 2013 5:21 pm

Its not a traffic signal or a streetlight but somehow our shop inherited the maintenance of this clock.Image

Stands 16 feet tall, the face is 3 feet in diameter. Controls in the bottom.

Fairly simple guts, compared to an Eagle EA controller.

One face hasn't worked for over 5 years. Turns out to be a bad motor. There are two motors for each face. A 1 RPM is for normal operation but there is also a 10 RPM motor that is used to fast forward for time setting.

I'm working on this on my spare time. A little cleaning and some new lamps and we're in business.

I plan on replacing the motors for both faces and hopefully it will run another 20 years. There were a couple of stuck screws so I'm tapping all of them up to 10-32 and using hex cap SS screws to hold the bezels on.

Very cool stuff! I don't collect clocks, but I like them. My grandfather collected them when he was alive.

That's nice! Assuming you have found a source for the motors, you may want to buy extras and store them in the clock. Twenty years from now when you need the next one, they may be unobtainable.

I knew I had found the right house to pick up my Chicago ESSCO, he had one of these clocks in his front yard

Neat project Joe!

A very cool "project" indeed -- thanks Joe, for sharing your work with us!! :clapping:

Do you know how old it is? It certainly looks like it should be "antique", but I'm sorta surprised to see those u-shaped flourescent tubes in there...?

We have an 'old survivor' street clock here in downtown Little Rock, though its quite a bit different than y'all's. I believe (but have no proof whatsoever) that it has neon tubes inside, but sadly I've never seen it lit up. Both sets of exposed neon letters are now broken (which could explain its darkness) but it still keeps time, anyway...

Here's a link to the manufacturer: http://www.herwig.com/#!clocks/c20x9
With the date on top, I put this at 20 years old.
