Painting worded command lenses...

Postby Detroit_Galaxian on Mon Nov 10, 2008 8:48 pm

I've just completed painting in the letters on a set of command lenses. This is the first time I have ever tried to do this. I used black Testors paint and a fine brush and carefully painted in the letters by hand.

I am not very pleased with the results. :( This was tougher and more frustrating than I thought it would be. The end-result looks roughly acceptable - in an "edges-worn-with-time-sort-of-way". I'm debating whether to leave them as-is, or to remove the paint and do them over again.

These lenses are the kind where the letters are a raised bevel that stands out slightly from the glass. (They are not the type that has a raised outline surrounding the letters.)

Some questions...

:?: When you guys paint your letters, how sharp do you manage to get your letters?

:?: If you are working with the raised type of letters like the ones I have, what gets painted?
A) Only the flat letter surfaces. Not the surrounding slanted bevel edges.
B) The flat letter surfaces -AND- the surrounding slanted bevel edges.

:?: How will do you think Testors model paint will stand up to the heat of light bulbs over time? (Probably not more than 25 watt.)

:?: Any other advice?

As a side note, here's an old MSN discussion about painting command lenses using masking tape and spray paint:

This looks kind of intimidating to do.

Also, does anyone know how they painted them at the point of manufacture?

Any pics of your lens? Why didn't you like the results, not precise enough?

It's weird looking at a post from 2003 and seeing over $2500 worth of lenses just laying on the ground like that... Of course, back then they sold for a few pennies per pound, no?

I know it's frustrating...been there.

My lense is still doing well with withstanding everything....time/temp.

The method I used (after failing with the hand painting):

A cop pulled me over and said, "Papers..." So I replied, "Scissors! I win!" and drove off.

Ryan,
To date, I've painted at least 28 of these lenses. Both varieties. Yeah, the raised reservoir is the more easier of the two varieties to paint, just let the paint drip into that nice STOP and spread it around even coverage, add extra coats at least 3 when they dry to satisfaction, no problems there... But those damned raised letter kind, are the real pain in the butt... But, they still can be painted in the same way. Here's how!

The testors black model paint is just fine to use. I run 40 watt frosted bulbs in my commands lenses, just because, it makes the letters more evenly lit, and the light is soft so it makes it easy on the eyes to read.

Take your brush and you testers black model paint and paint the letters the best you can carefully.

Between applications, have yourself a few Q-tips and some paint thinner. Just take the Q-tip and dip you a little paint thinner on it, and just run it around the edges of the letters, and it will make you a nice sharp edge, as well as sop up any little blotchyness that may get into the cross hatch grid.

This has been the method that has worked the best for me.

I have had some experience in this tedious painting of lenses, as, back in the Yahoo club days, I had spent a year and about $1200.00 finding 12 of the GO CAUTION STOP lenses for my CH 4-way. I found the lenses, painstakingly cleaned them all up, and painted all 12 by hand.... then months later, BROKE EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM when I moved a speaker they were stacked up on. Older members will remember my post on the Yahoo club when I did this!
I had to find 12 more lenses, clean them up, and paint all of them by hand..... again.

Good Luck!

George,

I do remember that posting.

Can you imagine trying to replace those command lenses nowadays now that they're being sought after like gold? :worried:

OK, here is my confession...

While being pressed to do some cleanup, I nearly tossed three of them in the dumpster before I decided to do a bit of research and stumbled across the Signalfan group. Before that, I didn't know that onyone considered those old lenses to be something special.
