Active Auctions and/or Advertisements - Discussion

Postby EdT. on Sun Jan 17, 2010 3:29 pm

Due to a long history of problems arising from active auctions or listings being posted in the forums, links and discussions of active auctions and/or ads (including Ebay, CL, Gov Deals, local auctions, etc..) will be prohibited until after the auction or listing ends. Any member wishing to post a link to their own personal active listing may do so in the For Sale forum ONLY, and they must be the person who initiates the posting.

Your cooperation in this matter is appreciated.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please post them in this thread.

I'm probably in the minority, but I don't like this decision. I understand the opposing point of view, but I like being able to post a link to an auction that I want to discuss, whether it is running or over with. :fulloshit:

Jerry, I do sympathize with your perspective and agree with you to a certain extent. BUT, please realize that we did not arrive at this decision lightly. We've been discussing it back and forth for almost six months now, weighing the pros and cons and a myriad of different scenarios. In the end we believe this to be the best way to handle a volatile subject and that it will benefit all the users here in the long run.

I agree with ya Jerry. Wholeheartedly. I don't see any benefit at all, honestly.

I don't think you will be able to enforce it. You will get the occasional newbie, and the lurker that only posts/checks the board occasionally and neither one of them will know about this rule because they have not read every post that is here. If they do post a link to something that is prohibited, what are you going to do? Ban them?

We'll enforce it to the best of our ability Jerry. The offending post will be edited and the user gently reminded of the rule. Should the user repeat the offense, then there'll be stronger action taken to make sure they're less likely to forget in the future.

Another good point, Jerry. Not everyone reads stickies in forums (I'll admit to not reading a few myself).

The way I see it, there should be more a forum input on this.

And truth be told, I've never witnessed a problem.

I always thought the purpose of any forum was to sponsor and host active discussions.

I think that we as users of this forum should be openly allowed to discuss any open eBay, CL, or any other form of auction or sale listing. That's been a part of this wonderful place since the days of Yahoo! Groups and I've never witnessed any sort of major hassle on it.

Okay... What if I want to post a link to an auction because I don't want others to bid on it? That banned I assume?

I agree with Jerry and Steve though- it ain't gonna work. You get the occasional heated argument, but that can come up with ANY topic. Might as well erase 'Ebay' from the Lounge description.

I think that some of the discussions that come about here from posted ebay links are useful and entertaining and sometimes provides insight about the item that we wouldn't otherwise know from those that see the post.

Just because some people's feelings get hurt that that item they want is 'exposed' on the group doesn't mean we all shouldn't be able to discuss it. Chances are most of us know about it already anyway. There is rarely any 'steals' to be found anymore online and I highly doubt that because someone here posts a link to something here that that makes a difference to the final outcome.

What is the reason behind this? Because certain people have whined and complained?

Another good point.

Frankly, Ed, I think you've got a LOT of opposition on this.
