Just wanted to see if I could put a pic in a message

Postby jab8356 on Sat Oct 25, 2008 10:19 am

Just like the subject says...

Does this text appear below the pic like I wanted it to?

Cool, now I can come back to the message and edit it too. I really like it here!

One thing I don't see is a Delete option. Is there a way to delete a message Ed?

Jerry,

Sorry, there's no DELETE option and there probably never will be. If there's something really screwed up with a message or it was posted in the wrong forum, etc.. , let me know and I (or a manager) will delete it. In fact, I'm unsure about the EDIT function too. Eventually I might end up putting a time limit on EDITing a message. Something like 1/2 an hour or until someone replies to it. My concern being that someone will delete or edit a message after people have replied to it, materially changing the post that the person had replied to. This was, IMHO, a huge problem with MSN:Groups and would lay waste to entire threads.

I moved this message to the Support Center where test messages should be posted. Gotta keep things tidy. ;)

BTW, nice porthole! You been holding out on us Jerry?

Nope Ed, that port hole is not mine, it was for sale on ebay a few years ago and I just saved the pics of it.

Ed,

Will we run out of space like on MSN? I had to delete old pictures so I could keep posting new ones over at MSN because as most of you guys know I love to post pictures. I don't want to be a show off when I post pictures of my projects...it's that I got my ideas from others members set-ups, and I hope that my set-ups will give some else some ideas for their projects.

BTW I think that there should be a delete button for unwanted messages. Sometime we will post something, and change our minds about the wording later. This might be a problem for some of us with short fuses ( not grouchy Mike of course he always stands behind what he says)LOL

Easy,

Ed and myself were talking about the picture space. From what I understand, You can upload a boat load of pictuers and will not run out of space.

Members can post all there projects here and keep them. Then if you want to show your next one, You can post that also without having to delete the old ones. And so on and so on and so........

And the best part is, if you put the Title of what you are looking for in the seach, (upper right corner) It will take you right to it.

Nonononononono! Phil I was referring to external photo hosting sites such as Flickr and Photobucket. With a free Photobucket account, you can upload up to a gigabyte of photos (that's approximately 10,000 100 kilobyte pictures or 1000 one megabyte pictures or 500 two megabyte pictures, etc..).

There are two big problems with hosting pictures here on signaltraffic; the actual server space to host them (basically the hard drive space on the server to store them) and then the bandwidth to serve them (every time someone opens up a message and looks at a photo). Both these problems are solved when using an external photo hosting site (such as the aforementioned Flickr or Photobucket).

And that brings us to the central issue - our particular area of interest is a very visual one. It's not like we're some Shakespeare fan club where we'd be content staring at pages and pages of text. We want and need to see photos of what we're talking about. The very last thing I want to do is suppress anyone's desire to share their photos.

Consequently I'm working on a bit of a FAQ and tutorial on what this issue is (summarized above), what the photo site options are, how to sign up for a FREE account, how to upload photos into that account, how to post photos from that account over here (and other sites) and how to share those photos in emails, etc..

Ideally I'd love to be able to host all the photos here (and I'm not ruling that possibility out) but that would require two things - modification to the forum system to manage the photos (there are a couple of these available, I will be reviewing them) and a method to offset the increased hosting costs (I'm currently paying for everything out of my pocket). As David (dwp49423) had suggested a year or so ago, perhaps the solution is in advertising (signal related) on the site? Or perhaps contributions from members. Ultimately I'm not sure what the best solution would be, but for now the costs are not significant enough to be a problem. I'll outline this issue (the hosting) along with the photo issue shortly.

That's a different kettle of fish entirely. For now there's an EDIT button to fix any message. Should you require a message to be completely zapped, just contact me and I'll zap it for you.

OOOPS

Ed,

I just opened a Photobucket account. I just need to learn how to post/link them here. I will be on the lookout for any help.
