That was Baltimore Ghosts (monumentalcity.net). However, I did not see that picture...


So, lets see... square 9" green section, both solid colors and arrows, have been heard of in use.
My guess would be they were used to make the indication a little bit larger, for better visibility... ( I don't how a 9" square lens compares in size to a 12" circle lens, though)

From what I remember, there was a reasonable explanation for the Baltimore examples - something to do with distance limiting comes to mind, but I might just be getting that from 3Ms being square!

Those square green -> arrows remind me of tollbooth/lane marker signals, where they'd show either the arrow or a red X.

It is interesting to see them combined with 'normal' signal sections though, no matter what lenses or where they were used!

I have a closeup of on the the Baltimore ones, yeah. Round lenses, with ped visors on them. Go figure. I can post a pic if anyone wants.

Yep. Those are what I originally saw on that Baltimore website. I'm surprised they are still in existence.

Too bad they are not what I once thought they were, since I couldn't remember that far back. Anyway, thanks for finding those.

I did visit these along with many other GREAT old signals in Martinsville

The ones first posted are actually long-grooves, but they are the only 2 that are. There are 8 others, all CH type R. The arrow lenses all looked the same, so I believe the lenses in the long groove signals are not original (I wonder what was?...). Anyway, I'll keep you posted when I get all my pictures sorted.

I have a set of lenses for that, haven't built the signal yet though.

Quebec used to do that all the time. Fortran used to make the signals

Are yours truly flat or are they square balls? I've seen red lenses like the old GE hand/man lenses, square but with a ball pushed out in the middle.

I-90 in the Seattle area used to have lane control signals like the ones on the Econolite brochure image posted on page 1. The section of I-90 between Bellevue and Seattle used to have reversible lanes. In the morning, three lanes westbound, one lane eastbound. In the afternoon, the opposite.
