NYC Repro Retro 4-way 2-color

Postby dkendr on Tue Aug 27, 2013 7:07 pm

Finally! The NYC retro repro 4-way 2-color with authentic phasing is up and running.

Sort of.

Since I wasn't ever going to be able to get around to taking the Eagle Mark IV cans and octopus-pipe connectors out to get blasted and repainted, I did the next best thing. I bought Chapel Hill (aka "CH") cans and new hardware and used that and the LEDs for the NYC signal and assembled a "retro repro." Add in a solid state custom controller from our friend Sean :hello: , mount on 3-foot pole, hook up wiring, and it's just like back to running for my life in Herald Square...

Check it at the 0:24 and 0:49 marks... full red-green. They never had red-green in all four directions at once, that was a phase between green-only and red-only.

Ok that was a weird YouTube glitch (becoming more common) where only a small part of the video downloads and the tracker bar at bottom only reflects the length of what was downloaded. It looked to me on the first try that it was a 20-second video.

The overlap is slightly too long (I apologize for being a critic), but the set-up overall, as I mentioned before, looks good. Looks exactly like the set-up at the N.Y.C. transit museum.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of 8" L.E.D. module inserts are in those heads?

When Sean was programming the controller, I asked for a conspicuously long red-green overlap phase because that's the part everyone wants to see.

Those are an older model of Dialight LEDs. The reds have red plastic covers, but the greens have clear plastic.
