Thank you guys. :hello: It feels good to have completed the first part. The restoration of my Ornamental Eaglelux has some direction now. One thing at a time and it will all get done. The next parts that I am going to make are the door hinge brackets for the opposite side. I need to make all three but I have a broken one that I can use as a form. I will post a picture of that part in this thread later tonight. Being able to make a part that I need gives me a real feeling of self satisfaction and definitely boosts my confidence as I go forward with other projects.

Jerry, the cutter was at approximately 750-800 rpm. Maybe a bit much for a 5 1/2 inch cutter in aluminum as opposed to an end mill, but I was making relatively slow passes with small amounts of material being removed. It worked just fine.

EDIT: Jerry, I just checked the mill. I had the speed set at 670 rpm.

The next part on the list to be cast for my Ornamental Eaglelux will be the door hinge brackets shown below. If anyone needs these parts and would like me to make them for you, speak up now. It's a whole lot easier for me to make multiple quantities of the same part rather than just one or two at a time. (Ryan K....this means you!) :Wink2:

I have a few other parts to make before I get to these so watch for these in the next few weeks. I will post pics of the other parts here as well.

I'm waiting for you to start making repro post top mounts for CH D 4 ways. Then you'll hear me loud and clear!
I'm so old I remember when the word "mother" only had one meaning!!!

Incredible work! That's amazing to see new parts come to life like that.
I'm jealous of your experience with this - you've probably learned an incredible amount of new stuff and are now empowered to do all sort of things that many of us cannot.

If you end up doing the hinge brackets, I need 3.
If you can do more of the latch brackets that you have already done, I need 2.
I can pay in advance, or later, and understand that the pricing will need to reflect that a lot of work goes into them.

(Jerry - thanks for bringing to my attention that there was new action on this thread!)

CH post mount bases have already been repro'ed by Mark Thomas. He brought an original to a casting company that duplicated it. He sold a number of them to members of the forum. You might try to contact him to see if he still has any left.

Ryan, I will make up the parts you need in the coming weeks. I have a few other items to get to first and I want to give a little time for others to tally up their OE needs before I get casting. I will keep you posted. :good:

UPDATE: So last time I tried to cast some OE parts, my molds were failing and the results were poor. I had to figure out why, and the most likely result was the quality of my sand. It wasn't the actual type of sand, but its condition. The sand has oil in it and as it gets used the oil burns off. That is what makes the black areas in the sand in the earlier pictures as I broke castings from their sand molds after pours. This burn off of the oil causes the sand to have less binding strength and it won't hold to itself leading to failed molds and poor quality pours. Before this morning, my sand looked like this:

Image

The solution was to run the sand through a muller to rejuvenate it. I recently purchased a muller on eBay and it arrived today. No sooner was it out of the box that I put it to work.

Image

Once through the muller, my sand looked much better and the scorched sand was now rejuvenated. My sand now looks like this:

Image

Once this was done, I began making some molds. I noticed how much better the sand felt in my hands than before it was mulled. This really made a difference in the mold quality. I am much happier with the results than I have been in the recent past. Here are some pictures of today's mold making and the resultant pours.

Just after the pours....

If you look closely, you can spot a pair of OE door hinge brackets, a pair of OE door latch brackets, and a pair of GE Novalux door latch brackets. Ryan, Larry, and John....those are your parts being born.
