What gives in Ontario?

Postby Catfan on Sun Jan 17, 2010 8:14 pm

Something very strange is going on in Ontario.

It seems as if, since 2006 or 2007, the new signal installs remain with yellow doors and visors, but the casing and back of the backplate are now gray coloured. What prompted the province to do this weirdness? **shakes head, is clueless** At least I have not spotted this in Hamilton (which uses black doors/visors, with the rest of the signals yellow), Toronto or London.

Any thoughts? :|

No too sure of why there is an inconsistency between municipalities.

But I have heard a nasty rumour. Ontario may be nixing the flashing advance green in favour for a green arrow. Toronto is currently going through with replacing the flashing green, but it's not law yet.

When I was in Vancouver last summer, many intersections had constant green light flashes. Not a quick flash that advance greens usually have, but a steady flash. What up wit dat?

I would guess there has been something going on with provincial installations. It could be a regional thing. I see Kitchener-Waterloo also seems to be remaining all yellow, in contrast to Niagara/St. Catherines, Sudbury and Ottawa. I find the gray backs most irritating, and unnecessary.

As per the green arrow, it would stand to reason that Ontario might nix the flashing green, as it may be confusing to nonresidents (such as other New Yorkers; I know what flashing green means).

There is another good reason to change. The dual lead and dual split lead phasings so common in the US are not available with the flashing circular green.

They might not be able to get the quick flashers anymore.

So, you think Canada should have the yellow trap too??
Well what do you know. If I put my name here, I do not have to sign it everytime.

If the flashing green is a lagging green (EXTENDED GREEN WHEN FLASHING), it DOES have yellow trap.

The constant green flash is for a ped signal install. When someone depresses the ped button, the signal changes from flashing green to a steady green, then yellow, and finally red. A bit like a fire signal, except that it goes to that steady green indication, whereas, a fire signal goes from the flashing yellow indication to a steady yellow in the section above, usually. Couldn't figure it out, until I finally saw an install cycle. Then, it was clear as to why the flashing green was used. With respect to Toronto's revisions, there probably will be a flashing green arrow, like what BC has, as a clearance interval before the through signals drop to green. I don't think I've seen bimodal arrows being used up there.

Granted, it's been almost 6 years since I was last in Canada. Used to go up there for Volvo parts that I couldn't find down here, then, a buddy of mine who worked at a Volvo shop up there started bringing stuff down for me when he'd be making trips to visit family, etc. So, there wasn't a need to go north. Also didn't help that the US dollar became almost equal in value to the Cdn dollar. Is cheaper to just wait for something to come in locally. Have seen some Cdn spec cars in the local yards lately.

We are nixing the flashing greens in favor of Bi-Modal arrows here in TO. In the city they still use all yellow signals but in the outskirts where I live they have been using the gray backed units for years. I even have a few of them in my collection. The only thing I could figure was the gray blends in with the blue sky from a distance, from a far you can't really even notice the backs of signal, just the yellow fronts you are supposed to pay attention to.

A yellow signal face front is necessary for a driver to be able to see the signal when the power is out at night.
