While at a local antique store this afternoon, I came across this interesting booklet, in which dates back to the late 1950s. Published by the then Port of New York Authority (now Port Authority of N.Y. and N.J.), the booklet generally talks about the plan for a second road deck to be added to the George Washington Bridge, in which was completed in 1962. Aside from the addition of this new road deck, the booklet also discusses the new and improved approaches on both the New York and New Jersey sides, such as the George Washington Bridge Expressway (commonly known as the Trans-Manhattan Expressway).

Below, are copies that I made of this booklet. Feel free to read the interesting information. Quite an interesting booklet for only $6.00 I must say.

Very interesting stuff. I didn't know the lower deck was that young. Wonder how much longer they'll wait to build a second lower deck.

Watch Copland. The last time there was that little traffic on the lower deck it was probably two minutes after they opened it!

Okay so not quite on topic but close enough for horseshoes as they say...

As I was doing a bit of organizing this evening I came upon this little treasure. I had picked it up a while back. If you're a regular reader of the NYC Roads site then you may know already that the George Washington Bridge was originally known as The Hudson River Bridge...(who new Washington was such a narcissist. :roll:

The "Hudson River Bridge," as the George Washington Bridge was called in the early days, was twice the length of any existing span, and it required an intricate system of access roads to handle large volumes of traffic.

What you are looking at in the print above is the Jersey (pronounced "Joisy") side pre (very) lower deck construction as well as many modifications over the years.

Needless to say many of the roads there have long since passed the way of the dodo (all though I do believe there is a descendant of the dodo actually running the Port Authority today).
