Resilvering Glass Reflectors

Postby 64ragtop on Tue Mar 30, 2010 7:42 pm

Hey Everyone,

Just got my resilvered reflectors back from Reflections Again - http://www.MirrorResilvering.com The e-mail address is: mirrors@321.net

Robert is the owner and he did a fabulous job on the reflectors for my late 50's Econolite grooveback. The price was good too (about 1/3 the cost of a local shop here in Los Angeles). You will have to ship your reflectors to him (San Jose California) but the good thing is YOU will be the one making sure they are packaged correctly. Robert will ship them back to you exactly as you packed them. I wrapped each one in bubble wrap, stacked and taped them together inside a box lined with Styrofoam and peanuts, and then put that box inside another box with a peanut cushion around all sides….you get the idea…and then sent them priority mail.

Robert schedules his resilvering on specific days of the month to save material costs. So if you’re not in a big hurry, the wait is definitely worth the savings. He did an awesome job and I will be sending him the reflectors for my Crouse Hinds model D, & DT soon. If you have REALLY bad looking reflectors, keep in mind that sometimes the glass becomes permanently stained over 50+ years and will not always look 100% perfect when resilvered. The stains kind of look like faint water spots – on a brand new reflector. I know this first hand because one of the reflectors I sent him was in HORRIBLE condition. I highly recommend! Check it out for yourself.

Great tip! I think a ringing endorsement like this deserves some photos (before/after).

Also wouldn't mind knowing a ball park cost of having this done... or at least what the competing shop quoted you so we can figure on 1/3 the cost.

Very good info. Got any pics??? I wanted to do that to the CHAD's I restored a month or so ago. Thanks for the info! :good:

I found this price info on his site:
Cost: $20.00/sq ft - Length (inches) x Width (inches) x .1389 = Cost. For items dropped of at the shop the minimum charge is $25.00 per piece. The minimum charge for an item shipped to Reflections Again is $40.00 (including return shipping). Note: The dimensions of the mirror are figured by the longest width and longest length. There is also a 5% hazardous waste charge for both retail and wholesale (minimum $1.00)....

OK... Here are some pictures. I've included the actual before and after of the reflector that was in the worst condition, and the reflector that turned out perfect. Also included is a picture of the back - painted in a flat charcoal grey by Robert. You can paint over it with the color and gloss of your choice for authenticity. There is no guarantee that any reflector in bad condition will not have permanent stains, but even if it does, it will look 99% better. A good option if you have reflectors that are hard to find in good condition.

That's all for now...

WOW! Those turned out great! Thank you for sharing the information and your resource. Resilvering reflectors is probably one of the least familiar aspects of a restoration for most members. I know I am going to send him some business. :good:
