Philips-Hella Eurpean Signals

Postby LarryC39 on Thu Nov 22, 2012 8:06 pm

Here's a 200mm signal made by [for?] the Philips Company of Europe and found in the Netherlands. The lenses are glass and produced by famous lens manufacturer Hella in a pattern similar to some USA railroad crossing lenses. The visor and body are molded as one unit. The door is the entire lens face, held on by four plastic Dzus screws, and kept from falling away by two levers when opened. It has two types of reflector and two different bulb holders.

Interesting signal, Larry.

I highly doubt this was ever seen in the UK, they wouldn't be type-approved for a number of reasons.

They look very French, actually, with the square visors. I don't know if NL have ever used anything with square visors either.

I have a Philips signal in my collection that came from Ireland - it uses the same lenses, however has a more familiar look to it, with regular visors.

It's a nice signal, though!

I wonder if Philips bought Hella's signal line at some point (during the production time of this signal)?

I also wondered if the Philips parts were just used to fix it in the past, perhaps? There seems to be too many Philips parts in it to be that, though, and on second thoughts, the Philips lens is identical to the Hella ones by the looks of it.
