Why?

A forum for the discussion of pretty much any item/equipment installed in the public right of way. This includes (but is not limited to) street lights, mail boxes, park benches, fire alarms, parking meters, bollards, poles (street light, traffic light, etc..) and phone booths.

Chicago's standard fire hydrant is short. Some have spools under them, but a lot are like this --

Milwaukee has short ones too --

Up until 2011, the sign/permit gave community gardeners in Milwaukee the ability to use hydrant water for community vegetable gardens.

Is it just me or does it look like the sidewalk is sculpted under the two hose nipples just full of dirt. Meaning you could still attach a hose.

Hi Larry,

When I took the photos of the hydrant, I noticed where the cement had been chipped away from the caps. The depressions are now filled with dirt. Guess that was an after thought. Still amazes me the side walk was raised without consideration for the hydrant. This is a very small mostly dead community and I am sure their resources are very limited. Would think that whomever poured the cement would have noticed.
